The actor who plays Matt Murdock as a teenager in the Daredevil movie talks about his role. Thanks to Robert Jamieson for making this interview possible.
Kuljit Mithra: In the Daredevil movie, you are playing Matt Murdock as a teenager. What kind of research or preparation did you do for the role?
Scott Terra: I didn't research any comics, but I took Gymnastics and Martial Arts. There was also a blind consultant that I met with named Tom Sullivan.
Mithra: What was your initial interest in the role?
Terra: I wanted to play a different type of role. Someone who is blind.
Mithra: Was it a tough audition? When did you learn you got the part?
Terra: The audition process was pretty much the same as most roles. I went three times to read for casting directors, producers and the director. My agent and manager called me in a conference call to let me know I got the part.
Mithra: While learning how blind people 'see' the world, do you think your other senses became 'heightened' much like how Daredevil is shown in the comics?
Terra: Yes, when I had my eyes covered it seemed like my hearing was more sensitive.
Mithra: What was your impression of working with David Keith and the other actors? Did they help you develop as an actor?
Terra: I mainly worked with David Keith (who played my Dad). He was a very cool guy. He was very prepared and very professional.
Mithra: How did Mark Steven Johnson guide you to act as the young Matt Murdock?
Terra: He let me do it the way I thought it should be played. He really gave me a lot of freedom to do my thing. He is a real actor's director.
Mithra: What impressed you most about Matt Murdock as a kid?
Terra: His determination to keep going after his father got killed and when he is blinded and abandoned in New York City.
Mithra: Do you have any problems being in films that are violent?
Terra: No, unfortunately there is violence in the real world. I don't think [the movie] is gratuitous, but it furthers the plot.
Mithra: Do you prefer a DD-type comic character, or a more super-powered hero?
Terra: I think a DD type, because it is more realistic.
Mithra: What's the main reason you think Matt became Daredevil? If Matt hadn't become blind and got his 'powers', do you think he still would have become Daredevil anyway?
Terra: I think he would have still become a vigilante and avenged his father's death even if he wasn't blind.
Mithra: How many days did you shoot your scenes?
Terra: I worked for approximately 5 weeks.
Mithra: How do you think the movie will do, based on what you've seen so far?
Terra: I think it will be very big. I'm hoping for a blockbuster!
Mithra: Tell me about the film you're currently working on, and what's next?
Terra: I just finished filming Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star with David Spade. David was a funny and great guy to work with. He plays a former child star that moves in with a family to relive the childhood he never had. I play the boy in the family he moves in with. I have some great scenes with David.
Mithra: Thanks for taking the time to answer all these questions. Anything else you think Daredevil fans would like to know that hasn't already been mentioned?
Terra: I did a lot of my own stunts and got to meet Stan Lee. It is a really cool movie!
