Issue SummarySummary by Gloria PortaDaredevil stops a couple of minor truants in the streets of Hell's Kitchen, and lets them now (in an unrelenting way that doesn't leave any space to doubt) that they are not welcome to the neighbourhood. Someone stops Daredevil from beating one of the crooks to pulp: Luke Cage, who seems disappointed at Matt's behaviour, and wants to ask him a favour. But Murdock isn't interested in the offer, punches Luke on the belly (hurting his knuckles in the process) and then leaves. But Cage's got other friends, among them a red-headed investigator currently working for Nelson, Blake & Murdock: Dakota North. Cage tells her that the case could be a good thing to keep Matt's mind from his current, dead-end concerns. At the offices of our favourite Law firm, Dakota exlains the case of Big Ben Donovan (a lawyer, and also a frequent foe of Luke Cage in the past), who has been sentenced to death for the murder of three children. Luke believes that Donovan, who has declared himself guilty, is innocent: Foggy thinks that Donovan's confession makes the case a tough assignment, all the more when in less than a week he will be executed. Becky Blake, on the other hand, thinks that Donovan's possible innocence must be given a chance. At Matt's home, we find our hero cleaning obsessively the house. Hard as he tries, he can still feel the haunting smell of Milla Donovan. Dakota asks her NYPD friend Inspector Alex Kurtz to give her some tips on "Big" Ben Donovan's case. Kurtz makes it clear that he's doing so as a personal favour to her, as he thinks Dakota is "mucking up a closed case". But our girl Dakota is stubborn. And smells something fishy. So next she brings a recorder to Sing Sing to hear Big Ben's own account of the facts. After briefing a friend on the phone (Luke?), she is bashed by a stranger outside a diner where she had stopped for a bit of perfunctory nourishment. At his apartment, an unshaven Matt is pensively holding his Daredevil mask as though it were Yorick's skull. Someone rings at the door: It's Dakota with a fat lip. She hands the recording to Matt and asks him to listen to it: she considers the attack on her as a sure sign that the Donovan case is more complex than it appeared at first sight. Matt's detached attitude angers Dakota, who delivers Murdock a heartfelt phillipic and then leaves with a loud slam. Matt then listens to the recording of her interview to Donovan. The day after this, a shaven Matt in a suit visits Sing-Sing and asks for an interview with Donovan: he wants to be his lawyer. |
