Issue Summary

Summary by Gloria Porta

Dakota has an unexpected guest at her apartment: her father, Samuel J. North. Mr. North is also a former agent of a certain government agency, therefore he has connections, and he knows some things about the Donovan case about which Dakota is unaware... Namely, that it is not wise to stir things, as the case has ramifications that might endanger National Security. Dakota is not precisely on good terms with papa, and she believes in Donovan's innocence, so she doesn't take her father's advice to quit.

At Sing-Sing, Matt Murdock and Franklin "Foggy" Nelson visit "Big Ben" Donovan at the prison's infirmary, where he is recovering from his attempted suicide. The prison's Warden believes that, however guilty Donovan might look, there must be more than meets the eye if Murdock is interested. Again, Donovan doesn't want any help from Murdock: he accuses Matt of wanting to mess up things, and his insistence being the reason why he tried to kill himself the previous night.

While driving back to the city, Foggy realizes how the scene has reminded Matt of the recent events, and tells him that Big Ben is not Milla. Foggy has to reassure Matt by saying to him that he's not the one responsible for Donovan's plight.

Back at Nelson, Blake and Murdock, the partners discuss the case with Dakota: Foggy is understatably concerned about the case being connected with the FBI, hough Matt's determination is not deterred by that. Becky ponders that there must be something there that is very important to Donovan, something so important that he is willing to die for it. Out in the streets there are construction works which are breaking Matt's concentration. A few blocks away someone is spying the firm. And reporting.

Matt is training in his private gym. While letting some steam out by punching the heavy bag, he ponders about what to do: he can't act on impulse like he's done in recent times, now it's time to think carefully about his next move.

Back at the office, Becky and Dakota are working in the case. While waiting for takeaway boy to bring them some edibles, Becky warns Dakota about the dangers of falling for Matt: Dakota is amused by the remark and tells Becky that Murdock isn't her cup of tea. Suddenly, they come accross some intriguing checks which were sent by Donovan on a regular basis.

Daredevil pays a visit to good old Turk, who tells him that his erstwhile employer, Mr. Slaughter, is doing business in the docks. Daredevil thought that Slaughter had retired, but he's far from inactive. So Old Hornehead heads to the docks to get more information from Mr. Slaughter himself.

Slaughter seems surprised by Daredevil's visit and claims to be in legit business now. He says that he doesn't know a thing about Henry Callinan, his children or "Big Ben" Donovan. As our hero insists in questioning, he hears an helicopter approaching: it is a trap, and he's being targeted.

The checks take Dakota to a Manhattan department, and to Benjamin Donovan, Big Ben's son. Neither "Little Ben" or her mother wanted nothing to do with Big Ben, so he is surprised to realize that the money supporting him was from his estranged father, and not the football scholarship at Columbia University. While Dakota is calling Becky to inform her about the interesting discovery, their communication is suddenly interrupted. Dakota lies in a pool of blood on the street. She's been shot.
