Issue Summary

Summary by Gloria Porta

Daredevil is held prisoner by Mr. Fear (Larry Cranston) and The Enforcers. Cranston, who has resented and been envious of Matt Murdock ever since the days they studied Law together, is even more angry about Matt getting back his life after his recent tribulations, while he has to live under a false name. Therefore he has resolved himself to destroy Murdock's life. As Matt asks what he has done to Milla we see how the police is taking her away. Foggy is there ready to take her defence and, while a bit dizzy because of Lily's pheromone smell, he focuses on the emergency and tries to locate Matt desperately.

Mr. Fear doses Daredevil with his fear gas and Ox throws him out the window. Daredevil fights to remain aware and manages to land in the middle of the street, being accidentally bumped by a car. As the driver gets out to check if he's alright, Matt angrily shouts at her: he's already hallucinating under the effects of the gas. Mr. Fear gives orders to voice to the underworld that it is time to hunt for Daredevil.

A couple of policemen notice him and go to arrest him, but Matt doesn't see them: instead he sees a bunch of ninjas from The Hand, and then Bullseye and Kingpin coming for him: he fights them all fiercely, particularly the Kingpin, mad about him returning to America, and to crime... but then he becomes aware for a moment and realizes that it is not Fisk he's beating, but one of the cops. Matt leaves the place looking for a quieter place where he won't hurt innocent bystanders.

Trapped in a new hallucination, Matt meets Karen Page. As he tries to kiss her, she refrains and tells him that their relationship could never work "Because you have to be the man without fear... and what good is that? because love is fear" Matt then realizes that he was trying to kiss a beggar woman who was trying to help him. A group of Mr. Fear minions try to get Daredevil, but he gets out of the place... He finds himself in... San Francisco? where he nearly crashes against the Black Widow: Natasha accuses him of beating himself and being brave in a fight, but unable to face his own feelings. She leaves, only to be replaced by Elektra, who teases Matt for clinging to the past.

Matt now finds himself being a kid, mocked by the other boys in the neighbourhood. He asks a blind old man if he can help him cross the street... but it is not an old man, but Milla. She runs into the way of a big truck and Matt saves her, transforming himself into the yellow-costumed Daredevil. While the bystanders are commenting about a kid having been struck in the face by radioactive stuff, Matt tries to retain Milla at his side, and she recriminates him because "the mask always comes first"... as Matt goes to check how is the kid, two spectators shout angrily at him and start beating them: it is the group of men who was following him.

As the thugs beat Daredevil mercilessly, Matt finds himself confronting his father in a ring. Jack Murdock tells his son not to give in "Can't be the man without fear if you let people in, Matt... but you can't be a man at all if you don't". Matt sees his father die again and then the effect of the Fear gas vanishes: Daredevil finds out that he's surrounded by fallen ruffians, which he has knocked down while he was hallucinating. Then he heads angrily in search for Cranston to get even.

Daredevil reaches Cranston's appartment, but this time he is cautious and, fearing a trap, he examines the surroundings from the outside. He hears Cranston's voice (which we see, comes from a computer) and a heartbeat (a bespectacled man gagged and tied)... Then he hears the sound of a detonator going out, and flees just in time to avoid being caught in the explosion. Daredevil opts to call it quits for the night and wait for Mr. Fear's next move, and returns home.

Matt reaches his home to find that Foggy is there waiting anxiously for him. Foggy breaks the bad news to Matt: Milla has lost her mind, not unlike Melvin Potter did earlier, and she has been arrested... for murder!
