Before Nekra's birth, her mother was exposed to nuclear radiation. Nekra was born with chalk-white skin, which was in sharp contrast to her African-American parents. By the age of ten, Nekra's mutant genes caused her to develop a vampire-like appearance, complete with fangs. She ran away from home, eventually meeting the Mandrill, and soon thereafter, formed Black Spectre.
