A published like that cannot and does not attract the work of great writers. And even when it does it's like the writers are slumming it. Morrisson's New X-Men is great. The Invisibles is better.
As for Miller specifically, I take it that you haven't read any modern Miller stuff. Do you really want Miller to come back to DD? Here's a preview: "Panel 1: Daredevil swings in and beats Turk to death. Panel 2: Foggy (who is also blind now) puts on a Punisher costume and says "alright, I think I'm ready now". Panel 3: Daredevil has a threesome with Elektra and Black Widow." |
I'm committed to Marvel because these are characters that I've loved for 40 years, some for even longer. At that time, continuity was new in the superhero realm. I took a 27 year sabbatical and when I came back, the comics world had gone through multiple revolutions and was a very different landscape.
With the advent of trades, I've started collecting quite a few Vertigo titles (some, thanks to your suggestions), touched base with Batman (I thought Spidey had way too much product, but Batman ) and have delved slightly into Wildstorm and just a handful of indies. Slowly, but surely, I'm discovering some fantastic creators that have been around for a long time, but are new to me. Given my completist nature, I can't afford, in terms of space as well as financially, to get too ingrained in another universe.
As far as non-DD Miller, the only other work of his that I'm familiar with is Year One (loved it), DKR and DK2 and just a little Sin City. As I stated in a previous post, I don't want Miller back on DD. But it would work for me to combine a great writer, as you referred to him, with the comics I would probably be buying anyway. You say Marvel doesn't have many great writers, so to me, adding another one would be a good thing.

P.S. Ralph and Sue Dibny are amongst my favorite comic characters. (For the silver age, it doesn't get much better than Ralph's adventures with the Flash or Ralph and Sue's back-up stories in Detective Comics.  )

But World War Hulk is the only big Marvel event that I've liked in ages. If it turns out that the Hulk is being used by the terrorists and Stark is just trying to save everyone, that would take my one shimmer of light in the mainstream Marvel universe and crush it. ...that's sad.

No, no, hekate32 was referring to Bendis's final DD arc with Urich getting stabbed in a movie theater and Elektra collaborating with Fisk, after Born Again. That Murdock Papers.

I hope not. For me, Chichester is the only post-Miller writer who could succesfully incorporate Elektra into a DD run. In fact, I think this is one area in which Kevin Smith was wise. Don't mess with Elektra. She's Frank Miller's creation and he seems to be the only one who really understands how to write her.
At the same time, I'm putting the disclaimer up that I always put up: if anyone can do it, it's Brubaker.

Which one is worse, having Elektra being written in a bad way and forgetting about that, or having Elektra being written in a bad way and come up with a moronic explaination about that?
Which is worse, accepting a past error or have it covered with another error?
