I think this is deeper than we could possibly imagine. The 60th anniversary of the Roswell Incident is fast approaching.

You want to "read the work of great writers" do you? Here's a hint: stop reading Marvel books. Honestly, I'm not a ranting anti-Marvel guy. I actually like Marvel quite a bit. I grew up on it and still read a few Marvel titles regularly. That said, wanting to read the works of great writers while being "committed" to the MU makes literally no sense. Marvel has not been on the top of the writing games since....well, I can't even think of when. Over a decade ago, that's for sure.
For better of for worse Marvel is a bit of a kiddie publisher. That's why they do all the cheesy "BIG EVENT" crap and are obsessed with continuity (well, in theory). A published like that cannot and does not attract the work of great writers. And even when it does it's like the writers are slumming it. Morrisson's New X-Men is great. The Invisibles is better.
As for Miller specifically, I take it that you haven't read any modern Miller stuff. Do you really want Miller to come back to DD? Here's a preview: "Panel 1: Daredevil swings in and beats Turk to death. Panel 2: Foggy (who is also blind now) puts on a Punisher costume and says "alright, I think I'm ready now". Panel 3: Daredevil has a threesome with Elektra and Black Widow." |
I'm committed to Marvel because these are characters that I've loved for 40 years, some for even longer. At that time, continuity was new in the superhero realm. I took a 27 year sabbatical and when I came back, the comics world had gone through multiple revolutions and was a very different landscape.
With the advent of trades, I've started collecting quite a few Vertigo titles (some, thanks to your suggestions), touched base with Batman (I thought Spidey had way too much product, but Batman ) and have delved slightly into Wildstorm and just a handful of indies. Slowly, but surely, I'm discovering some fantastic creators that have been around for a long time, but are new to me. Given my completist nature, I can't afford, in terms of space as well as financially, to get too ingrained in another universe.
As far as non-DD Miller, the only other work of his that I'm familiar with is Year One (loved it), DKR and DK2 and just a little Sin City. As I stated in a previous post, I don't want Miller back on DD. But it would work for me to combine a great writer, as you referred to him, with the comics I would probably be buying anyway. You say Marvel doesn't have many great writers, so to me, adding another one would be a good thing. _________________ It's never too late to have a happy childhood! |

Sister Maggie is a Skrull
Turk is a Skrull, and so is Merv (poor Chico is unaware of it)
Baby Karen is a Skrull posing as a Cabbage Patch Kid
The misterious appearances of the dead Stick post-Miller are explained because it is not Stick, it is a Skrull
The lovely Debbie Harris suddenly turned into a real b*tch and cheated on poor Foggy? she was a Skrull, the real Debbie Harris is actually in suspended animation in a Skrull underground lab.
Kevin Smith is a Skrull
Sue Dibny was a Skrull... oh, wait this was in DC _________________ Gloria

Oh no you didn't!
P.S. Ralph and Sue Dibny are amongst my favorite comic characters. (For the silver age, it doesn't get much better than Ralph's adventures with the Flash or Ralph and Sue's back-up stories in Detective Comics. ) _________________ "Flash is back. Worlds will die again!" |

But, most astonishing, the Super Skrull is not a Skrull. |

But World War Hulk is the only big Marvel event that I've liked in ages. If it turns out that the Hulk is being used by the terrorists and Stark is just trying to save everyone, that would take my one shimmer of light in the mainstream Marvel universe and crush it. ...that's sad. _________________ "Flash is back. Well, at least that would make some sense.
Certainly more than a Skrull impersonating the leader of a ninja clan for who knows what reason.
Ah, and Forrest, did you read my PM?
Also, you just reached your #1337 post. |

No, no, hekate32 was referring to Bendis's final DD arc with Urich getting stabbed in a movie theater and Elektra collaborating with Fisk, after Born Again. That Murdock Papers. _________________ "Flash is back. Worlds will die again!" |

Unfortunately I think that was actually the real Elektra. I wonder if this will be addressed in DD#100, where Elektra is probably reappearing (at least judging from the cover). |

I hope not. For me, Chichester is the only post-Miller writer who could succesfully incorporate Elektra into a DD run. In fact, I think this is one area in which Kevin Smith was wise. Don't mess with Elektra. She's Frank Miller's creation and he seems to be the only one who really understands how to write her.
At the same time, I'm putting the disclaimer up that I always put up: if anyone can do it, it's Brubaker. _________________ "Flash is back. Worlds will die again!" |

It's the same old story, Forrest:
Which one is worse, having Elektra being written in a bad way and forgetting about that, or having Elektra being written in a bad way and come up with a moronic explaination about that?
Which is worse, accepting a past error or have it covered with another error?
I think it's the latter. |
