4 out of 5 for me.
While this ending was a bit rushed (the DA apparently able to route out most, if not, all the Serpent elements), I've enjoyed the Sons of Serpent storyline. This was a racist militant organization that had systemically infiltrated nearly every level of the criminal justice and law enforcement systems of NYC, a system that Matt values and holds dearly. This is different from the Kingpin having certain people on his payroll or blackmailing them for information and their cooperation, which is why the Sons were to able to compile a much more detailed file on Matt's history than the Kingpin was able to.
(Speaking of which, to my knowledge, the Kingpin never intended to use that information to out Matt publicly as the Sons had threatened. He only used that information to take Matt down personally. So with the same information, each party had completely different goals).
With Matt unsure of who to trust and who is corrupted, Waid created a decent atmosphere of suspense and drama. This issue's focus on Matt's integrity demonstrates to me how well a handle Waid has on the character.
The only complication I see with Matt's reveal and disbarment is this should call into question every single case the law firm handled and/or won. Otherwise, a good send-off to the new land of San Fran. |

I'm a trade waiter so I just caught up and boy am I sorry. I started out really, really liking Waid's run but he's completely lost me at this point.
The newest trade (volume 7) was pretty awful. The monster squad stuff came from and then went back to nowhere.
The last two issues were the most annoying though. Consider this: the moment the two serpent dudes confront Matt in the hospital room everything that came before is meaningless. Waid built this big thing with this racist organization that had sleeper cells everywhere but as soon as those guys showed up it was just two dudes blackmailing Matt with the Murdock Papers.
Which raises a tonne of issues. Where did they get all this info on Matt? Why didn't they use it before? Why didn't Matt threaten to burn their evil book again? Why is Matt so upset about being blackmailed into defending an innocent person? Isn't that this job?
The resolution was even more ludicrous and out of nowhere. Matt beat up some thugs and they gave evidence? Didn't he beat up similar thugs before? Why did winning one Courtroom fight get rid of the serpents?
It was all sloppy and rushed and contrived and boring. _________________ JC
So why can't you see the funny side?
Why aren't you laughing? |
