This was a good issue. I knew Cranston was behind this. That guy is such a nasty SOB. He has driven Melvin insane, used his chemicals to make Mila into a murderer and is spreading his fearless drugs across Hell's Kitchen in order to torment DD. The man is willing to promote sorrow and death in order to get revenge on DD. DD has to give him the beating of his life in the next arc.

Another stellar issue. Yeah, I figured it was Mr. Fear, but with Bru's style, it doesn't matter whether I can see where he's going or am completely baffled, the journey is so awesome.
I like how the supporting cast has grown in both quantity and significance, without taking away from the central figure. Didn't Dakota North once have an ill-fated series?

One minor nitpick, why does the title page say part 5 of 5 when the story hasn't been concluded?

Because the next arc is a direct carry over in terms of the story line. This arc directly sets up and is a continuation of the next arc. "To The Devil, His Due" deals with DD vs. Gladiator which directly ties into the DD vs. Mr. Fear story in "Without Fear". While they are seperate arcs, they are part of the same storyline, it just would have been crowded to fit Gladiator and Mr. Fear in the same arc.

I was sure that he was behind this ( And I am sure that DD will have a well known bald fat man as un unlikely ally in the next arc, there is just to much thing left whith the whole Vanessa Fisk death ( if she truely died, anything could happen with ed brubaker, and in a good way ) ), but it's good that brubaker seems tu use him at his true potential ( a reverse DD )

If Matt has to battle Cranston on court and DD has to battle the sociopathic and sadistic Mr Fear in the street, it could really be " the battle of his life " and Cranston, as both a Matt Murdock and DD villian could become a threat for the man without fear as dangerous as wilson fisk was in the miller era. ( and nobody has been that dangerous since DD #1 )

but whereas Fisk is driven by his need of power and money, Cranston is only driven by hate, and that make him a scary bad guy. I'm sure that by the end of " without fear ", he will be the one true mister fear, the only one who deserve the name.

So do you think DD has found a good replacement nemesis while Kingpin is on vacation?

Also does Cranston does have thing about framing DD's love for murder? Didn't he do that 10 years ago? I guess he feels merely killing them would him too much Bullseye. Maybe its his inferiority complex, he can't merely kill DD, he has prove to himself that he is more intelligent than DD, in order to prove his own self worth?

Yes, Cranston seems to have developed a strange obsession in destroying and torturing the wife to hurt the husband since his ( still not explained ) return during the 90's.

He did it with karen in DD 375. It seems likely that he poisoned vanessa fisk to be sure that wilson fisk won't be kingpin anymore and now the whole Milla thing...

Is it his new modus operandi ?

I don't think Cranston killed Vanessa, he is crazy, not stupid and I don't think he has a death wish. Cranston hates Murdock more than anything else, making him suffer is all he seems to care about. Plus it seemed that Cranston and Vanessa were business partners, with Cranston getting a huge sums of money from her. Plus she was in Europe, it would be tricky for him to poison her from across the pond. I doubt he did it.

As for why he is still alive that's a good question, but that seems like a common theme with B-list DD villains: People kill them off, other writers forgot they were killed off and bring them back with no explanation. The same thing happneded with Owl and Purple Man.

As for Fear's M.O, I think he feels he has to beat Matt in court in order to prove he is superior. Its not enough for him to merely kill Matt's girlfriend or wife, because anyone could do that (maybe he doesn't want to copy Bullseye) but only Matt's true superior could "beat him at his own game". They are both lawyers afterall.

So, Mr. Fear is the source behind Lily's condition right? I think it is also possible that he may be involved in Vanessa's death. I would welcome this connection.

I read a ton of books this week, but nothing left me in quite the shock that Milla did in the subway. A great (tragic) scene.

Now all I need is a Bowen Mr. Fear bust. Very Happy

Bru's really got me.

So far I only had waiting eagerly for an issue month after month on very remarkable occasions. Say, Miller's DD (both runs), Walt Simonson's "Thor", and Alan Moore works like "Watchmen", "from Hell", "Promethea" and "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen". Now add Brubaker's Daredevil to the list. In fact, I have, for the first time in my life, subscribed to an original USA edition. So far, when I was interested in a series, I just picked them at the nearest available store with USA material.. but now I couldn't stand missing the odd issue because all have been sold when I get there. And I'm most certainly utterly unable to wait for the trade. Completely. I'm Doomed. Shocked

If you ask me, I don't agree with some voices saying that the plot of these last five issues was slow and uneventful: to me there has been plenty of action, and the characters' actions and reactions have been built masterly to end as they do in the explosive #99. Events after this issue are likely to develop mightily. Poor Melvin. Poor Milla. Poor Matt. What a mess. There will be a way out? I have faith there is one, but how, only Heaven and Bru know: This couldn't be possibly a five-issue story, it had to be continued.

An interesting thing is happening in the background: Foggy gives Java and sympathy to a woman... Remember "Born Again"? Foggy's a dangerous dude when offering a cuppa coffee. The woman is no other than Lily Lucca (who's been seen wearing clothes which increasingly cover her body: next issue she'll be wearing a Burkha).

Now let them alone for a while and then there's something that there wasn't there before, Hi Lily, Hi Lily, Hi-lo... But wait! is this "The sound of Music"? Nah... This is the Goddamn Daredevil! Has Lily really changed her past ways? Is she really looking for help and seeking redemption? or is she a pawn -willing or not- of the evil mastermind behind all that? As much as I'd like Cupid to draw back his bow and and let his arrows go straight to old Nelson's heart, I'd hate to see Foggy' dating any more girls who suddenly into she-demons.

The scene in the underground station was gripping, with the hysteria and paranoia growing on with every single panel, I really felt trapped there as I was reading, and all ending in such an "Oh, F---" moment. And Murdock is missing, subject to the Ox tender mercies.

When I saw the Ox in a previous issue, I considered Fear as a serious candidate for being the one behind that (though, just out of caution, I didn't discard anyone). Cranston having this obsession with Murdock makes him an interesting villain, his resentment with Murdock ever since they were studying in Law school : you could say that makes him like a Foggy choosing the Dark Side of the Force. Brubaker has turned him into an entirely fearsome character, and hateable, too: he obviously has a lot to answer to.

I recalled the story by Joe Kelly where he tried to frame Karen Page for murder: he demonstrated well what a vicious, resented b*stard he could be then. I also recall... huh... Willie Fisk helping DD about that! Wonder if that might happen again: Cranston sold that perfume to Vanessa... humm...

If you ask me, hope Fear gets the good kicking he deserves at the end: I hope he hurts like someone with piles sitting on a fakir nail-chair.

Mmmh. Foggy, Dakota or Becky should get the phone and get Natasha for some extra help. With all the Civil War mess probably Murdock is more alone than ever... I just hope the Widow is available and ready to kick ass in spectacular fashion.

Just something I realized (and I'm sure some of you already have thought of this)...

Could Becky have been taught at night school by Cranston!?!? The connection with Gus could come from there...

Fantastic issue, loved every page of it. The return of the Gladiator was something I was very happy about, and Bru did him justice. Issue 99's ending has me dieing to read issue 100. Cranston seems like he is going to make some interesting reading. Can't wait!

That's a quite intriguing possibility!

Incidentally, I wonder to what poit has Matt briefed his Law partners about DD's current and past enemies, if not, he should: he can no longer act as the Lone Ranger, specially when everybody around him is in potential danger due to the Murdock-DD connection.

In a recent thread here about DD's weapons, there was some humorous talk about adding some extra gadgets to DDs Billy Club (as the ones illustrated years ago by Wally Wood: DD's stick had even a radio and a recorder!).

Now I'm thinking very seriously that Matt should consider that suggestion by Francesco:

Honest, by now, Matt should get a hold of the Cell-phone concept.
