The Message Board is currently in read-only mode, as the software is now out of date. Several features and pages have been removed. If/When I get time I intend to re-launch the board with updated software.

I think there's a hint when a mob-guy punches Matt and his dad (without knowing it's Matt) tells him it's gonna leave a mark...
Maybe during the last round Jack Murdock will see the black eye on Matt's face and then understand he isn't "weak".
Overall, I like this mini much more than DD:Father. I hope the last chapter won't ruin this feeling. _________________ Visit the Red Shaker |

You may be right, although I think it would actaully be kind of hard for a boxer, in the middle of a ring, to notice a black eye on anyone who is several rows back. But, yeah, like people say, "it's a comic." (Which apparently can excuse anything).
And, of course, the logical train of thought for Jack would be "Hey, my blind son has a black eye! Of course he didn't get that by bumping into something because of his blindness, that must have been him wearing that mask who helped with those mob guys!"
You are most likely right. This would be okay (I guess) because it wouldn't change Jack's motivation in winning the fight.
Still, this mini has many problems.
1) Jack's inital low opinion of his son (being "weak"). I think that is an oversimplifiction of what Jack thought of his son. Jack may have his problems (ie. being a drunk) and may be a tough guy. But, when it comes to his son I think he should have been portayed smarter than that and not just some macho thug who thinks his son is "weak."
2) Maggie. Thus far this mini has done a major disservice to her character. She's reduced to a religious nut. And, I'm sure when DD:Mother comes out we'll see why she's like that. Perphaps the blind guy Matt saved just before he was blinded molested Maggie too
3) Matt being Daredevilish before Jack's death. Jack's death was the catalyst which motivated Matt to put on a mask and protect others. Really, unnecessary (unless, of course, a writer needs an excuse for a boxer to see his son's black eye).

I don't think the black eye would be a very good explanation but I only suppose the scene with Matt fighting the mob-guys was put there to be re-used later.
I want to keep the faith in this mini and I want to believe this scene won't be meaningless (as... let's say... the fight versus the Santerians in DD:Father)

I don't think the story is simplifying that.
Jack Murdock is a father who wants his son to live by the book, by the law.
At the same time, he's earning his life with his fists or with a stick and he once told Matt :
"In life it's the guy with the stick who gets to say what's right and what's wrong"
I think it's a good explanation why Matt Murdock would later try to play from both sides of the law.
His father raised him to be "a good boy" but deep inside he knew the system was flawed.
This mini is far from perfect but I consider it's a much better shot at Matt's relationship with his father than other previous minis (Father, or even Yellow). _________________ Visit the Red Shaker |

Exactly.
That is why I don't think Jack should ever characterize Matt as "weak." It comes across as a macho, tough guy making fun of (or feeling sorry for) the kid who doesn't use his fists. I just think it was simplified characterization on Jack's part, in regards to his son. And, this falls on the writer.

Regarding Jack considering -or not- Matt as "weak" or if you prefer other wise "able to fend for himself" , there was a quite interesting take on the subject in the issue published in the "flashback month" ("A time to say farewell" by Joe Kelly and Gene Colan).
In that story we saw Jack taking Matt to the university, not without worries as how Matt would fare there, and there was a scene in which Jack saw Matt dealing very ably with some bullies in a bar, something which reasured him that Matt could cope with College, and life, without his protection.
Not related to the current "Battling Jack" series, but I thought that this old story about Jack and Matt might be of interest _________________ Gloria
