The Message Board is currently in read-only mode, as the software is now out of date. Several features and pages have been removed. If/When I get time I intend to re-launch the board with updated software.

This issue was a mixed bag for me.
One of the things I loved about Volume 3 was the incredibly respectful way Waid and Samnee dealt with Foggy's cancer diagnosis. I've been finding Volume 4 much less respectful.
Volume 3 showed Foggy fighting cancer. Volume 4 is treating cancer like a death sentence. From the first issue of Volume 4, I've been very uncomfortable with this "Foggy is dead" trick. I can't imagine what it must be like for someone fighting to beat a potentially fatal disease being asked to pretend he lost the battle. It's an awful request Matt and Kirsten have made of him. And this is in stark contrast to what was going on in Volume 3.
I know that Matt is putting Foggy's best interests first, in his own strange way, but it doesn't make it any less awkward for me as a reader.
Other than that, I enjoy how Waid's version of Daredevil is always one step ahead of everyone else, and what a risk-taker he is. But by the issue's end, we don't know much about this villain at all, and because he came off as pretty generic, we aren't really wondering.
Hoping for better, but I'm now thinking that Waid may have peaked in Volume 3.

I think one factor that mitigates that to some degree is that Waid does bring that up within the book itself. Their conversation in the park highlighted it to some degree, Foggy being resentful of this new move and Matt feeling it's necessary despite his fears that it will interfere with Foggy's needed treatment.
But Waid went one step better and gave Foggy a 'death' that was more noble and if need be later on, could be more easily 'reversed' than if they went with their original idea of Foggy dying from the cancer. Plus, the shot of the newspaper headline at the end was cool. Franklin 'Guts' Nelson, yeah!
The villain was a good update, I thought. I wonder what connection, if any, he had to the original one.
Once more, it's great seeing Hank Pym here again.
Samnee did an excellent job with the action scenes, the explosion and aftermath shot at the end were especially well done.
Another fine issue from this creative team. |

Kind of surprised not as many people have written about this one. Like most of the recent issues, I have mixed feelings. It was kind of weird to see this as a flashback issue. That said, I like that it addressed the issue of foggy somewhat and answered some questions about him and his situation. I also like that it gave us some story and character and human interactions after the last story arc that, while decent overall, was a little sparse on drawing us into the plot.
At the same time, the second half of this issue had me scratching my head. It was okay, but much of it was just too coincidental for my liking. The two of them are just walking through the park when SUDDENLY ROBOT! It leaves me with a few questions, like:
-Who was that guy?
-What are the chances this opportunity for a cover up would present itself at the exact moment they were talking about it? (Deus ex machina, anyone?)
-How did the guy know that Matt was going to be in the park?
-Was he hiding his giant frogbot in the creek, just on the off-chance that Matt would walk by that day?
-Did he know in advance that Matt would be there?
-Did he find out that Matt was already there?
-If so, how did he sneak a twenty-foot frog robot into the middle of a crowded park in broad daylight?
-How long was he down there, anyway?
-How did Foggy, a cancer patient who was already out of shape to begin with and had burned himself exercising, climb up a two-story mech with no visible ladder faster than Matt could have just hookshot himself up there with his pole? I know they used this for Foggy's death, but Matt's internal monologue implies that we couldn't have done it anyway, even though it definitely seemed well within his ability to do so?
-How did Foggy manage to make the thing jump anyway?
-How did Ant Man get out of Foggy and save the day so quickly?
It was still an okay issue, I guess, just don't think about it too hard. |

yep, a not so good plot point, which has nothing to do with the new direction/fresh ideas aspect of Waid's run. |
