Whenever I see mention of Daredevil in a mainstream source, they always refer to him as "d-lister" or something similar. Why? Granted, I wouldn't say he's up there with Spider-Man or the X-Men, but I thought he was a fairly popular and well-known character ever since Frank Miller came on. Maybe he's more of a 'cult' hero, but d-list indicates that he's on the level of Speedball...

Whomever will refer to DD as a D-Lister only means he knows not the character regardless of how that person claims to be an expert on comics. Yes, DD is no Spidey, but far from a D-Lister. DD is a character very much downplayed. Meaning for example, he was wildly popular when Bendis was writing him but Bendis barely weaved him into New Avengers, and all the other big ass crossover he wrote like House of M and Secret Invasion which was read widely having tons of Marvel characters in it. If only writers and Marvel will plaster DD on every funny book they have like they do Wolverine? Then DD can live up to what he truly is...Marvel's answer to Batman!

I am not so sure about the "main stream sources" you are getting your info from. DD is not at Spidey or Logan's level of popularity but he is widely viewed as one of comics best characters and a main event player in his own right. Over 500 issues kind of guarantees that, on top of all the mini-series, his supporting cast to rival any and the not so awesome Ben Affleck film. Ishe Batman, Superman or Spidey? No, but they are up there all by themselves in the common knowledge and promotional department. They are known just as much for toys, cartoons, campy TV shows, kids underwear patterns and lunchboxes as they are for their comics. That's why grandmothers and little kids may recognize Spidey/Peter PArker and not Matt Murdock. Of course, DD is not really for the kids or your grandparents anyways. As for over-exposing him to the masses like Wolverine...um, not thanks. One of the things that makes DD a great character is his ability to hold his own and carry his own little Hell's Kitchen-central universe. It's great that he interacts with other characters, but making him a full fledged Avenger and sending him off into Space to battle the Kree just wouldn't really make sense or be true to the writers and artists who molded the hard-boiled MAINSTREAM marvel hero.

DD is written so he can't become as popular as other characters. That's how it seems. He's a loner so he won't be an Avenger,he's a street leveler so he couldn't do anything in Secret Invasion, His identity has been found out so he was in jail during Civil War, He has his own book so he's too popular in the comic community to latch on to a character like Spider-Man or Wolverine to raise his buzz (like they did with Deadpool).

Wouldn't have it any other way. Once you start seeing Daredevil on McDonald's cups then you should be worried. DD has a cult following, his own viable niche. I'm not saying he can't be a headliner/mainstream character but if he ever does... well it's a double edge sword. Cuts both ways Hoss.

By the way... Speedball... c'mon man, you can do better than that. The kid was a joke along with everyone out of that whole NW crew, with the exception of Nova. There's a reason why Cage and Fist make occasional cameo appearances from time to time.

I think Speedball changed his name to Penance, if I am not mistaken.

Speedball or Penance would be a D-Lister. I would compare DD with the likes of Deadpool and maybe The Punisher. These would be B-Listers I would think?? He sure gets a lot of booty for not being an A-Lister.
