Showdown 4 is another three-ways match, featuring two "DD, the Lone Stranger" tales and an issue exploring a supporting character.
- V1 #219 is a very special DD-story by Miller and Buscema.
- V1 #268 is from Nocenti and JRJR, set in the "away from NYC" period.
- V2 #94 is the one-shot from Brubaker and Lee Weeks focusing on Milla.
As stated on previous showdowns : try to re-read the issues before voting, tell us what you liked (or disliked), which details you remembered, what makes the story special to you... anything you want that relates to the issue ! Express yourself !
This poll will be running for four days. _________________ Visit the Red Shaker

I had to go with Ann myself. I really loved that issue. _________________ "This isn't hell, but you can see it from here." -The Crow |

Well, I kind of surprised myself with this one by actually voting for the Nocenti issue. I'm not a real fan of "Badlands," which I think is very overrated and "Our Love Story" is good, but not great. "Golden Rut," on the other hand is quite interesting. Matt comes across as a complete @$$, but oh well... _________________ The Other Murdock Papers |

Badlands has basically the same plot than the movie "High plains drifter" directed by and starring Clint Eastwood.
Except Matt replaces Clint and "High Plains" are switched to the New Jersey.
But re-reading it, there aren't many "DD-touches" added to the story.
In the "Lone Stranger" kind of story, "Golden Rut" is much better. Here, the writing of Matt's senses by Nocenti is very well done. The scene where DD says he's "the right end of the rope" is very striking. And the final panel of Matt getting back on the road after having set things right has "Hulk-TV-series" or "Poor Lonesome Cowboy" feeling.
I vote for #268. Golden Story. _________________ Visit the Red Shaker |

Well, having discarded Badlands, which is a good tale no doubt, but indulging a bit much on the whole "lone stranger" mannerism, I'm still undecided between Milla's story and Golden Rut.
I'll see.
Just a pair of thoughts on the two issues:
Nocenti uses a lot of thought baloons for Matt, in Golden Rut.
Our Love Story has a few "recent continuity" errors.
P.S.
Thanks Alley |

I voted "the Golden rut"... re-reading can do this to you!
"Our love Story" I believe a good comic, offering a much needed insight into Milla's character... Why did she marry a guy like Matt, a guy who could steal the "Twenty-Two Misfortunes" nickname from Yepikhodov himself? Brubaker offers here some good reasoning for that. Solid Art is supplied by Daredevil artist Lee Weeks.
"Badlands" is possible the Miller story about DD to which I am most indifferent. It is a bit, hum... topic (little town, corrupt authorities), and no reason is given about what Matt is doing there as a Marlon-Brando-in-"the wild one" stranger. I imagine that this is the kind of story that Miller (who voiced that Matt's career as a lawyer was distracting to him as a writer) wanted to do with Matt. No wonder, then, that at the end of "Born Again", Matt is no longer a lawyer, but a cook in a hamburger. John Buscema is always a reliable artist, but his work here seems here to be just average.
On the other hand, in "The Golden Rut", we know why Matt is Wandering (that has been established in previous issues), and his intervention to put an end to an unfair situation is a bit nasty, even though we feel the bad guy had been asking for that. Most of all, as in "Promises" (the Ben & Doris story) we focus here in the plight of a (low?) middle-class married couple concerned about their income and status. It is good to see that the husband finally opts for not doing the bad thing: he prefers to be a poorer man than own a miserable soul. _________________ Gloria
