Daredevil Message Board The Board Without Fear!
|
The Message Board is currently in read-only mode, as the software is now out of date. Several features and pages have been removed. If/When I get time I intend to re-launch the board with updated software.

The problem I have with that is mostly because I disagree with the third point. To me, it's a terrible introduction to the character because it's a complete deconstruction of the character. All the elements that have been established are laid bare, but it gives a misleading sense. You want to get a feel for the character as a whole, not when he's losing his mind.
He has several issues without a single bit of rational dialogue (or narration). _________________ Matt Murdock's cooler twin brother

About the deconstruction, Miller executed it so well that how often was this aped and imitated by later writers? It lends itself to the overall perception (right or wrong) of the tragic nature of the character. So why not start with the best version of the deconstruction and one of the pillars of the tragic model?
On the flip side though, while Matt is deconstructed, BA is also about rebirth. Matt comes through this tragedy stronger and Miller highlights what may be the central appeal of Matt, that even at this lowest of points, he never gave up.
What's a better representation of the character than that? |

The reason why I don't like the idea is contained within your point. I think it gives a misleading appearance of what Daredevil is. It's the reason I don't think people should start with Bendis's run. Bendis's Murdock makes sense as someone slowly snapping, but many people think it's just who Matt is. You start with something like Miller's original run so you can appreciate it when Matt is shaken. Otherwise, you end up with people who think Matt acting "normal" is out of character. _________________ Matt Murdock's cooler twin brother

Very well put. I completely agree, and that's why I would lend a new reader Frank Miller Visionaries Volume 2, which starts at #168. I think that's the best place to start, and let them get to #191 (collected in volume 3), and then lend them Born again. |
