I'll give my review. Spoilers (obviously):
The first issue of Saladin Ahmed's run. It's obvious that it's going to have a lot of exploration of faith. It's interesting coming from a Muslim man, but Ahmed embraces it wholeheartedly. There's a sense of both the universality of faith as a strengthening force and the alienness of it to those who aren't followers. I don't know if he chose the new status quo, but it works wonderfully. The demonic being or whatever it is works well. It's genuinely creepy. Reminds me of Spirited Away with that sense of body horror. Zdarsky obviously explored faith in the end, but went in the direction of the Hand. I'm glad to see something different. The art is very solid, but the colorist shines. Honestly, it reminds me of Guardian Devil. I didn't like Quesada's art for how sexualized Natasha was, but I loved the use of red and this follows that.
Side note: I'm really amused at the Priests saying damn and hell a lot. Catholics are a lot looser with it, but it fits the idea of him being an unconventional priest.
Four and a Half Stars. It's just getting started so I hesitated to give it five, but I really enjoyed it. _________________ Matt Murdock's cooler twin brother

I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!

I'll just get this out of the way. The storytelling had nowhere to go but up. Ahmed seems to be making lemonade out the sour lemons the previous writer left him with.
The first two issue have been solid and intriguing. I wanna see where this goes, but it better stay intriguing. The dialogue flows much better and the art is amazing.
I don't like that Matt is still in this ultra religious "I'm working for God" mode, but I guess that's the new modern character. He already remembers everything now of his old life, but is just... staying a priest and not telling anyone he's alive because... God?
I do feel like it's intentionally confusing, but there are still some illogical elements and questions. Matt's a semi-famous guy and he's been walking around as priest for six months and no one recognized him? Also you can't just become a priest like becoming a plumber. It takes many years. I'll lay all that at Zdarsky's terrible storytelling. Maybe the whole of Matt's universe has been rebooted again. Zdarsky did it once with no regard to the character or his history, why not twice.
I miss the charming and intelligent lawyer who was respected by his friends and peers. He's been missing for far too long. |
