The new upcoming series finds Matt moving to San Fransisco which does have that 'been there, done that' kinda vibe to it.

So I was wondering, if you had to move Matt out of NYC, where would you move him to? It could be within the USA or anywhere in the world.

Or should Matt stay within NYC, seeing as how the city is almost a character unto itself in the book and character's history?

Myself, if I had to move Matt, I would have him stay in the Orient for awhile. That may be treading close to ninja territory, but since Miller, there's been a level of mysticism to Matt, an area that I think would be better explored in the Orient.

So I think it would be interesting to see Matt swinging around Hong Kong. The city is diverse and large enough to simulate certain NYC elements while also being a source of adventure and noir intrigue.

Thoughts?

Oh, is that what's going on in the #36 preview? I didn't know anything but the cover image, so I had imagined something different from him moving. Smile

If I were to move him... well, I don't think it would be for long, since as you said, NYC is almost a central character in the books. And Matt is such a homebody; every time he leaves NYC, it never seems to last for all that long. He even said in a Bendis issue that it felt like cutting off his right arm.

Maybe LA? That would be my first choice; seems to have more of an "underworld" vibe and less of a "Berkeley" vibe than San Fran (but what do I know - I live in the Midwest). Smile Still California, so he'd still be licensed to practice law.

Or, if we were to go with East Asia... maybe Tokyo? I don't know offhand if he speaks Mandarin, while I know he speaks Japanese, and Tokyo definitely would have the big-city feel that would make him feel not completely away from home.

(Question: just how many languages does he speak? I knew he spoke Japanese, and of course English, and I assume he speaks Spanish and probably at least a little Mandarin and Hmong, and Latin (because of law school)... but apparently he also speaks German? What else? Swahili?)

I don't think I'd have him leave the country, though, simply for the practical issues of writing it. Constantly showing people speaking in a foreign language, or speaking English in italics with asterisks everywhere, or worse, implying that they're actually speaking English when they have no reason to... the first two options are viable for maybe two pages in a book, not every page in a whole TPB.

Plus, unless the writer is actually knowledgeable about the culture, having entire stories set in the culture can never end well, if any of his readers, at all, happen to be more knowledgeable than he is.

[Edit: I just changed my wording slightly, so that the post now answers the question you actually asked, instead of what I'd initially read. Sorry if there was any confusion before. Smile ]

You know I think I would put him somewhere totally out of his element. Maybe India? The noise levels there would be crazy, not to mention the change in landscape so no high rooftops to leap over (unless he was in Mumbai). Plus the crime levels there (particularly against women) are exploding right now. Would make for some very dark themes.

Springfield, Missouri. Queen City of the Ozarks.

In all seriousness the idea of Asia sounds pretty cool. But all the suggestions are good ones
