I mean, this image says it all:

Just too cartoonish for me. Lack of perspective, rough lines, stupid facial expressions. Like watching a middle-afternoon cartoon on TV with a sandwich and an orange juice from my mom (when I was five)

I have an issue of Wizard that celebrates the tenth anniversary of Marvel Knights, and there is a feature where Kevin Smith, Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti go over the Guardian Devil arc. When writing the initial meeting between Matt and Macabes, Smith admitted he was still making it up as he went along, and hadn't even considered that Mysterio was going to be behind all of this. That's why it makes no sense -- haphazard writing.

As I said, I've been enjoying Waid's run to this point. I'm far away from home, but soon I'll be able to read #33. Hopefully Waid will make this all make sense.

You mean Smith didn't even know this old guy would turn out to be Mysterio covered in smelly greasepaint and latex? I still give Smith credit for the run, but that's something . But did Waid say he didn't know at first that Bulleyse would be the mastermind? Actually, comics has a long tradition of this kind of thing.
From the wikipedia page on the Owl, there's this...
"Originally Bob Layton, writer of the first five issues of X-Factor, had intended to use the Owl as the Alliance of Evil's mysterious master (mentioned in X-Factor #4 (May 1986). The final page of X-Factor #5 initially featured the Owl, but as Layton was removed from the book and replaced with Louise Simonson, the final page was changed to feature a new character named Apocalypse instead, as Simonson and editor Bob Harras wanted a new villain for the book.[1]"

If you find that issue of Wizard, you'lll see that, indeed, Smith did not have any idea who the mastermind behind Matt's troubles was going to be. That's a fact.

Well, I can just say again that's not unusual in comics. As to my post above, I wish the Owl hadn't lost his big break.
I wasn't happy at the time with the ending of the Smith story. I liked the supernatural/religious element and wish it had been at least partially real. I also didn't like importing yet another Spider-Man villain. I'd like Kingpin to be DD's alone, and wish he's gotten the Enforcers a long time ago, but he's also had the whole Sinister Sx except Sandman, and it just makes him second tier yet again. Plus, Mysterio used that awful line to the effect, "I can't beat Spider-Man, but I should be able to beat a nobody like you." That's shown up a bunch of times in DD stories.
