I think this 2-parter was possiblly the worst story of this volume. The art was fine at best. The story, itself, was cringe worthy. There is something to be said of taking books back to their Silver Age fun roots. There is even a way of making it appear fresh and hip (Morrison's Club of Heroes in Batman). This isn't one of those ways. This was simply silly and I have no desire to ever read it again.
I think I'm done with this direction. The first 25 issues are fantastic. I'm just due for something gritty and noir with my DD now. Some gristle on the prime rib so to speak.
The last issue of Dark Nights certainly didn't help either. _________________ Love is blindness, I don't want to see

I'm still enjoying the fun Waid version of the title, but ya... I'm really starting to miss the darker version of DD as well. I think it's time for it to come back, maybe in a more middle of road version of it. Not as dark as how it was getting in vol. 2 but a nice mix of it and the funner version that Waid was doing. I've also really had enough of the Samnee cartoon-y artwork. It is just obnoxiously simple. Marcos Martin and Paolo Rivera had a simple style to their work too but it was refined and looked good. Samnee's just looks like what you would see in an Archie comic. Seeing Lee Weeks's work in Dark Nights has made me long for the darker looking version of DD too. So hopefully with volume 4 we will see some of these things again. |

The painfully bad flirty dialogue between Matt and Misty Knight killed that issue for me. |

This two-part monster story was Waid's weakest effort of Volume 3. Jason Copland's art was a considerable step down from what we're used to. I'm bummed that there are only three issues after this. |

Silly and pointless. Besides, it looked and felt like a bad, bad imitation of Nocenti's take on the character, which made the whole thing even sadder |

Yep. Just read about it. New numbering, old creative (?) team. Talk about silly and pointless. I'd have welcomed the opposite |

Yeah, and I don't even get it from a sales view. The sales now are what they are, mid-level as usual for DD. Keeping the same team and same aesthetic won't bring in anyone new, or bring back any old readers. It seems like a lost opportunity to get some publicity for a new look, unless there are readers who just want to see Samnee draw some San Francisco landmarks.
The netflix series is presumably going to be in Hell's Kitchen, and while the comic doesn't have to be, it would seem strange for it to be completely different. But it looks like at least another year of this stuff. |
