Stan Lee is 90 today. I want to wish him a very Happy Birthday! I don't have to tell you how important his co-creation of Daredevil means to me. Who knows, maybe without Daredevil I would have made a Paste Pot Pete site.
Here's what Stan Lee said in 2004 about Daredevil, when I asked him what it meant to him personally and professionally to work on this character...
Daredevil was very important to me because he was the first superhero I created who had the serious physical handicap of blindness.
It was a challenge to me to find ways for Matt Murdock to overcome his handicap and actually function as a credible superhero.
I'm enormously pleased that the project turned out so successfully, evinced by the fact that Daredevil has been a popular hero for four decades. It's also a source of great satisfaction to me that each succeeding writer has brought new, interesting concepts and characters into the series.
So here's to our good ol' Man Without Fear. Long may he reign!
Excelsior!

Stan, along with Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby, revolutionised comic books and pop culture in the 1960's. Everyone since has only been playing with the toys they created.
Some have done it very well, (I'm thinking of the likes of Miller etc,) who took a character and 'made it their own' in some way. However, the concept was always there in the first place. The blind lawyer seeking justice. Simple but beautiful.
DD is unique in the fact that it was Stan and another, Bill Everett, who brought this character to life (Kirby had a hand in character design). To both men I'm eternally grateful for many, many hours of avid reading about a fictional character I've cared about and followed for almost 40 years now.
And for the fact we were spared the Paste Pot Pete site
Happy Birthday, Stan. |
