The backup Nocenti story is DD vs. Bullseye? Awesome.
Shoutout to KM is also awesome.
The inclusion of 191 is a great deal less awesome. I don't get anniversary reprints. The whole thing screams of cheap padding.
PS take that rgj. _________________ JC

Thanks guys. I've been away for a week so it was nice to see this when I got back today. I helped out with the cover gallery section for Volume 2.
Anyway, I've got lots of catching up to do and lots of updates to do as well... check out the pinups by Rafael Grampa and Stefano Gaudiano! _________________ Kuljit Mithra

Thanks Kuljit, you beat me to it!
I have to ask: after Bendis and Brubaker, is it going to become a tradition for the outgoing Daredevil writer to credit you and your website in the final issue of their run? |

Well, this time I actually did something (I helped with the covers at the back of the issue)
So, did anyone else read this issue? I just finished reading it (and I'll probably read it again and again). Dave, on first reading I didn't get the same impression that you did of wrapping things up too quickly... but maybe that's because I sorta knew the ending coming. But there are going to be some really interesting issues by Andy Diggle... _________________ Kuljit Mithra

I had also suspected where things were headed (I seem to remember that some of the preview art for Diggle's run gave the game away), but I feel as though Brubaker could have taken a little more time to get there.
The subplots involving Izo, Kingpin, Milla and Lady Bullseye all felt as though they had received too much build-up to get such a quick payoff, and I can't help but feel that Bru's decision to leave the book meant that he had to wrap these story strands up more quickly than he had intended.
Still, I guess that's not the worst problem in the world to have with the issue. Usually I complain about the opposite, as far as superhero comics are concerned - that they're too "decompressed" and stretched-out. This was a dense issue with a real sense of energy, but in the context of Brubaker's entire run, it all felt a little too swift and convenient. |

First of all, I came into work early yesterday because I knew that I couldn't resist reading the new issue before I started my real work. And I'm glad I did.
I really liked this. I do agree that it seemed a little forced, but at the same time I was excited to see Matt doing something other than moping. I am hopeful that Diggle will take things in a more proactive direction with DD. |

After reading Dave's review, I was sure I wasn't going to love this issue, since I know from past experience that I tend to agree with Dave's reviews nine times out of ten. Well, this was one of those times where we'll just have to disagree. I loved this issue. I may not be 100 % comfortable with the new status quo, if only because I don't know how Diggle will play it, but Brubaker took a development I knew was coming (and wasn't sure I was going to like) and totally sold it.
What comes next could either mean really exciting stories and a totally invigorated book or end up ruining the character. Okay, so that's a little dramatic, but it all hinges on Diggle's ability to handle the character and make him seem like himself even in such unusual circumstances. If he's got good instincts about the character, we have little to worry about since he does know how to write great plots with tons of intrigue. _________________ The Other Murdock Papers |

Yep, there's a lot riding on Diggle's shoulders here.
Anyway, I'm interested to know what people made of the back-up features? I quite enjoyed Nocenti's story (and loved Aja's artwork) but wasn't quite so keen on the preview of "Dark Reign - The List: Daredevil". |

Howdy, gang!
I was really excited for this 500th issue. While I didn’t think it was wretched or anything, I’m stunned by how it is being lauded by everyone I talk to and so many reviewers. [Dave, I think you were spot-on, by the way.]
While it’s not terrible, it felt SO rushed to me. But that’s not my problem, I love silver age stories where major changes occur in a matter of panels and villains arise and are dispatched all within one issue, you know? But what I didn’t like here was how so little seemed to happen in the issues leading up to this one (esp. since the terrific Kingpin-in-Spain issue) and then, in #500, every two pages sees a quasi-left-field solution to a lingering problem:
“Sorry, Milla. Love you! See ya ‘round!”
“Sorry, Milla’s parents, you can have her back now!”
“Oh, wait. Izo’s been there all along.”
“Black Tarantula is good now!”
“Let’s defeat the Kingpin in moments. And allow him to escape.”
“Oh, Lady Bullseye, too!”
“Sorry, Foggy and Dakota. See ya ‘round!....And store my stuff!”
Perhaps Brubaker hoped to leave the book after finishing these plot points in his usual style (4.5 years from now, based on his usual rate…..)?
Mainly, though, I’m not that excited to see this turn of events. Some of the biggest reasons I like the book are the setting of Hell’s Kitchen and the legal intrigue and his supporting cast. If he’s the new leader of a group of (at best) gray-area ninja killers wrangling with Dark This-n-Thats and on some List or other, then I’m not that stoked. And, if it’s temporary and he’ll be back (his stuff is in storage – all those candles and swords and coffee grinders and pictures of dead and insane lovers…poor Foggy….), then they’re just wasting my time for 12-18 issues until he gets back to where we want him to be…..
Of course, Diggle might be great and I’ll be loving it. I AM excited for the change in creative team, just because I’m restless.
Backups:
The Nocenti story was a treat. I love that personal touch for a little back-up and the art was everything I would ever want for a DD book. That’s right up my alley. Of course, second to Mr. James Castle, I may be the most (red) flag-waving Nocenti fan you’ll find around here.
Diggle’s List preview was so-so. I wish we could have seen his writing with De La Torre’s art, as I recall really liking his style from his Iron Man stint. That might help with the “clinical” vibe I caught in the Diggle approach.
Lastly, I recently re-read all of vol. 2 up to Brubaker’s run. I’m about to dive in to it and read it in one quick go, culminating with my re-read of #500. Perhaps that will change my mind about some of this. But….
- Kevin Smith makes me furious – vol. 2 starts with issue 9, folks!!!!! There should be a recap page that says, “Uh….Bullseye killed Karen Page…now let’s get down to some real DD.”
- I like Mack and I like Echo. And I like vision quests and Wolverine. What?!?
- I’m not a Bendis fan in general, but his DD run is terrific. I love Maleev’s art, man! They took some chances with storytelling approaches and even the big changes to the character felt natural. I far prefer it to the Brubaker/Lark run – yes, even Decalogue and Murdock Papers…..there, I said it.
I stopped buying DD for awhile (as you may recall from my Brett-Favre-like goodbye post [sorry international readers, for an NFL reference]), bored and irritated with Brubaker’s water-treading, ineffectual DD. I got back in with this last arc and made up the few issues I had missed. I’m hopeful about Diggle’s run. But, let’s face facts: Daredevil is coasting on the fumes of previous, better creative teams. I think, in the end, I love DD because of Frank Miller, you know? |
