And I'm also working my way through some older collections: Morrison's Doom Patrol and Invisibles, Gaiman's Sandman (the Absolute editions are beautiful) and John Byrne's run on Fantastic Four are all competing for my attention at the moment. |
Morrison’s Doom Patrol is my second favorite comic of all time. It’s psychological, philosophical, surrealistic and yet makes complete sense, within it’s own context. And for conspiracy theorists, it’s like the X-Files on acid. It’s got the Brotherhood of Dada! And it features, some of the original concepts that were ‘borrowed’ for the Matrix, including controlling virtual reality, entering the data matrix, the keysmiths and storing consciousness on disc. I found the humanity of these misfits who hardly seem human, almost inspirational. There’s one part that completely pulled the emotional rug right out from under me. And the ending, which like much great art, is open to interpretation, I found to be uplifting and endearing without being sappy. I can’t recommend these 6 trades enough.

I just finished the final TPB a few days ago, and I have to agree with you. And yes, the ending is great. Far more uplifting and positive than I expected. The "Danny the World" sequence is wonderful. |

That's my main problem with Morrison. When he clicks, he's like nothing else in the industry. All-Star Superman Vol. 1 was outstanding, far better than I initially thought it would be.
But when he misses, watch out, it's like a nuclear meltdown. I haven't touched a single page of Final Crisis. Judging by the all the reviews and fan responses I've seen, it sounds as if I need a bloomin' score card and spreadsheet to keep up with what's going on.
For me, Fraction is a writer worth keeping up with. His X-men work has been steadily improving and when I can afford it, his Iron Man work is great. His Tony is the one I've been waiting to read of since CW.
Back on track - this was a decent set-up issue. The North-Perkins scene were dragged out somewhat but I'm continuing to like her and Matt's dealing with the consumation of their relationship. It's good drama. It's great to see Turk and Josie's again.
I do hope we'll get some form of resolution to Lady Bullseye's gripe with Matt before Brubaker leaves. |

I'm one of those (apparently few) readers who thought that Final Crisis was fantastic, possibly one of Morrison's best and most career-defining works so far. I loved it. |

I think FC suffered from the same problem as Secret Invasion and that is, it was dragged into being a major event.
In my estimation, Batman RIP was heavily tied into FC (especially seeing as you have to read FC just to get the ending to RIP!) Now, I like that Morrison was allowed to do something new and inventive with the New Gods. As Marvel is currently doing with both the Inhumans and the Eternals, the New Gods were just...sitting there, waiting. But could it have been a self-contained event instead of a major DCU event? Perhaps, but I think it would have worked out better as such. Other than the New Gods re-emergence and what happened to Bruce, what really was the end result of FC?? |

I've heard this sentiment expressed a lot by Final Crisis readers. Personally, I don't think that there have to be long-lasting effects for an "event" comic to be meaningful or significant. Morrison's comic was more epic and more exciting than any other recent "event" that I've read by virtue of its own story, rather than because of any changes it made to the DCU status quo.
Marvel's approach seems to be to make each of their "event" comics a catalyst for the next big universe-wide change to the status quo - which would be fine, if the stories themselves were good. However, for me, their last decent "event" book was Civil War (and even then, it had its problems). The last couple of years haven't offered anything particularly noteworthy, and they seem to be stuck in a pattern of making big sweeping changes to their universe without taking the time to explore them afterwards. |

i'm sure it's the same for you guys, but for me personally when a DD issue comes out I just feel all warm and toasty inside. Kind of like a euphoric feeling
