I do love #181, but if it's deemed to not be a stand-alone issue (and I do think it stands alone just fine. It's pretty self-contained...) than I'll vote for #223 -- the one where the Beyonder gives Matt Murdock his sight back. Sure, it's the first issue of Daredevil I ever bought, but Mazzuchelli did some of his best artwork in that issue, and Denny O'Neill really gets to the heart of who Daredevil is.

Yeah, #223 is another favorite of mine (and has a nice Glorianna appearance too, since we're discussing her in another very active thread). Of course it also has that scene with Matt being a complete creep and staring at a baby for five minutes. And, speaking of creepy scenes involving infants, how about the other stand-alone issue James Castle mentioned above (#316, Fare Play) where Matt helps deliver an alien. I'm serious. If you haven't read it in a while, check out page 10. Easily one of the weirdest drawings of a baby I've ever seen. Laughing

Anyway, since Blind Alley started this thread, maybe it should be up to him to decide whether this showdown should be restricted to one-shot issues or not. I was just thinking that having an additional showdown later might be a good idea since you presumably can't have too many of them. Wink

UPDATED: I obviously missed Blind Alley's recent post and the presentation of the line-up. If I seem confused, it's because I am.

Okay, so I've already kinda nominated three (although I'm not really that behind "Fare Play"). However, how did I forget: #268 - "Golden Rut"? It's not my favorite stand alone. It is, however, Nocenti's favorite stand alone. And it has a crazy name.

Everyone has already mentioned some of my favourite single issue stories like 223, 266, 268, 304 and 380 so I'll add a couple of others I like.

The first and last Ann Nocenti stories are great one shots to me.

#236 With that weird guy Hazzard, it showed that we we're in for some strange and interesting characters with Nocenti, not to mention her great spin on moralty in her stories. It was a great starting issue and the art by Barry Windsor Smith didn't hurt either. Oh ya I love Black Widow too so it was great to have her come back into DD's life again.

#291 DD gets his suit and mind back after his awful ordeals he suffered for a few years. He beats the crap out of Bullet as paypack and recognciles with Foggy after years and years apart too (our time that is) it was a great and touching scene and a great end to her amazing run on the title.

Hey, a couple more for consideration:

1) #225. ". . . And Then You Die"--DD takes on Vulture. Amazing Mazz art.

2) #238. "It Comes With Claws" DD takes on Sabretooth.

Seriously, before we vote we have to read these issues. Just to get a reminder of the details that made some of these issues great.

Well, I've edited first post once more.

For now, I have kept the first two nominations that people made and I've also listed "supplementary" nominations.

I have also discarded 181 and Fare Play.
181 because some posters don't consider it as a stand-alone and, as jumonji said, it could be discussed in a future "Best Single Issue" showdown.
Fare Play because JC said that, in fact, he was not really fond of that issue

So we have 13 + 4 contenders.

If other nominations come, I'll take at least the first of each poster to reach the total of 16 contenders.
If there's much more than 16 nominations, we can push to 24 contenders, with first rounds beeing "three sides matches".

I loved that one! A bit depressing, yes, but we had Matt brooding over Heather's death, Foggy over his divorce and teh failure of the Firm, and both somewhat coming to the conclusion, in the end, that they had to move forward (even if it wasn't too clear where to go).

I love most of the issues already mentioned, but I'll name some of my favourite ones here:

One is Vol. 1 # 185, "Guts" with Mr. Nelson doing the Slam Bradley act, and, yes, Vol. 2 #88 with its "it's a hard world for little things" Nelsonian pov.

Other issues are the O'Neil-Mazz story "Fog" (Vol. 1 #220), where Heather dies and we see Matt being a bit of a jerk with his ex (and then feeling guilty about it), also the O'Neil-Miller-Mazz story "Warriors" with a nice spot on poor Melvin Potter, while Matt's life is falling apart.

And of course, Harlan Ellison's-Mazz Vol. 1 #208: "The Deadliest Night of My Life!"... Probably one of Matt's thoughest days (and he's had his share of those!)

That one is an action-packed romp, and I would have mentioned it myself.... if not for the fact that at the end Daredevil is able to make out a painting of the Deathstalker's mother hanging on the wall from the middle of the room. A careless error on Ellison's part that marrs the entire issue for me.

Yeah, sometimes you wonder what editors are for? He shouldn't have missed that very basic fact about the character in the first place, but where was the editor? Stuff like that takes you out of the book a little, I agree. Rolling Eyes

If there's no objection, I'll include Gloria's four late nominations to the showdown (as third tiers) :

V1 # 185 "Guts"
V2 #88
V1 #220 "Fog"
V1 #208 "The Deadliest Night of My life"

I don't mind, but one alternative would be to ask Gloria to pick her two favorites from that list.

oh, I can't really decide... it's not a matter of loving one above the other: I liked them all, as well as the other issues mentioned by other people in the thread.

It's like making a list of one's ten best films ever... Why limit yourself to a "ten best" when there a re such a lot of wonderful movies?

There's still room to include the four of them in the brackets, so let's do it (it doesn't seem there'll be other nominations).

Gloria, you'll have to defend each of them in the showdowns to come ! (and each will have two contenders to "defeat")

Beyond voting a "best" stand-alone, I see these showdowns as an occasion to re-examine some great past issues, so the more, the merrier.

By the way, are you (yeah, you the seven voters...) people ok with the showdowns running for 4 days ? Should it be shorter ?

I think four days is good. Gives us a chance to get to a comic shop if we don't have a particular issue. (That's right. I don't have #245... Embarassed )
