|
|
It's been a while there's been no showdown on these boards, I propose to run a showdown of "Best" stand-alone story (complete in one single issue)
If you feel like it's a good time to discuss that kind of thing, nominate ONE or TWO stand-alone that are your favorites.
Don't explain why, keep the explanations for the rounds that will eventually follow...
You can pick V1 or V2, and even annuals...
EDIT :
So far, we have 13 nominations :
#169 "Devils"
#191 "Roulette"
#192 "Promises"
#219 "Badlands"
#223 "The Price"
#236 "American Dreamer"
#245 "Burn !"
#247 "The Backwards Man"
#266 "A Beer With the Devil"
#277 'Of Crowns and Horns"
#291 "All The News That Fits"
#304 "34 Hours"
#380 "Just One Good Story"
And a few others that might be included ("supplementary" nominations from posters)
#225 ". . . And Then You Die"
#238 "It Comes With Claws"
#268 "Golden Rut" _________________ Visit the Red Shaker

Does #181 count as a stand-alone? I think it does. Bullseye gets out of prison, kills Elektra and fights Daredevil, thus getting paralyzed. Best single issue of a comic ever! |

Since I know that Francesco is going to nominate my personal favorite (#191, Roulette), I'd like to nominate "34 hours" (Vol 1, #304). It's by Chichester before he went nuts. It's just one of those cool "a day in the life of..." stories and a good one at that. Perhaps not a very famous issue, but a good example of a well-written one-shot.
Next, I'd like to nominate Vol 1, #2, when DD battles Elektro. Nah, scratch that. I'm just kidding. Knowing that someone will nominate #191, I'll just stick to #304.
UPDATED: I'd like to add that Francesco posted the above entry while I was writing this one. Now how did I know he was going to nominate #191? _________________ The Other Murdock Papers |

ESP powers? Who knows?
Nice choice with that.
The fact that folks like Tony Stark and Hank Pym were constantly repeating that superheroes need to register in order to be "properly trained" and "not endanger innocent lives" proves that they've never read DD #304. |

Realizing that it'll only get in the bracket if we're really short I nominate #247 - "The Backwards Man". Why? It's a kick ass and crazy off beat story of a man who is physically a slave to his memories. Plus, in my opinion it was the first hint that we were all in for some crazy times thanks to Nocenti (it was also my very first issue of DD but that has nothing to do with it). So what DD is barely in it (and, as I recall, has virtually no real role to play)? He's on the cover! That should be enough.
I nominate it just because it's the perfect issue with which to get into crazy Nocenti debates.
My second nomination is "Bad Lands". The Frank Miller tale of bad cops and bicylce chains. Because it's a good indication that Miller is a little on the unhinged side.
I know it's too early for this but I offer a pre-emptive "Hurrah!" for "34 hours" which I really liked (I would also nominate #314 - Fare Play except that it's basically "34 Hours" in the subway).
I also offer a pre-emptive "Boo!" to Volume 1, #4 or whatever the one where DD fights Namor is. Overrated like crazy. _________________ JC

It's V1 #7.
Well as I forgot to do my nominations, I'll go for #169 "Devils" and #192 "Promises". _________________ Visit the Red Shaker |

Whoa. How is #181 a stand alone issue? It's a continuation of a major storyline.
But, anyway, I nominate two Nocienti gems.
1) #266. A Beer With the Devil.
2) #277. Of Crowns and Horns. --- this one doesn't even have DD in it.
I suggest that we all actually go back and read these stories before we vote on them. Just for refreshers.
Long live the showdowns!

The fact that the 182 picks up right where 181 finishes sure doesn't help either. It's not a stand alone. _________________ JC

What if we turn this into a single issue showdown? Standalone issues would be automatically favored, and at the same time we would bypass the limitation of not being able to include great single issues such as #181. |

I say we stick to the one-shots. We can always do another showdown later, right? So my suggestion would be to take out #181 and only do stories that really begin and end in the same issue. After this, maybe we could do a best issue in any category showdown.
And yes, I also think Vol 1 #7 is really overrated. I guess you could say it tells us something about how DD doesn't give up even when the odds are stacked against him and thus earns Namor's respect, but it's really not that great a story. It's too predictable. _________________ The Other Murdock Papers |

I do love #181, but if it's deemed to not be a stand-alone issue (and I do think it stands alone just fine. It's pretty self-contained...) than I'll vote for #223 -- the one where the Beyonder gives Matt Murdock his sight back. Sure, it's the first issue of Daredevil I ever bought, but Mazzuchelli did some of his best artwork in that issue, and Denny O'Neill really gets to the heart of who Daredevil is. |

I'll nominate v1 #245, the team-up with Black Panther. It was a poignant tale with a great main character I wouldn't mind seeing again. |

I've edited the first post with the nominations.
We have 10 contenders, 16 would be required to process.
If we have enough nominations during this week-end, we might start next week... _________________ Visit the Red Shaker |
